Daughter of Duke John Frederick of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Amalia was married to the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I (d. 1711) in 1699. Their two daughters were discarded from the succession by the declaration of her brother-in-law Emperor Charles VI's Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, benefitting his own daughter Maria Theresa.
