'Monsieur' was the younger brother of King Louis XIV (see lot 106). He was first married to King Charles I's sister, Henrietta, who died mysteriously, and secondly to Lieselotte von der Pfalz, the 'Palatine'. Despite his notorious preference of male company, he became the father of the 'Régent'.
