The dusty brick-red field with an overall lozenge lattice enclosing a variety of flowering shrubs and trees, in a narrow indigo rosette, serrated leaf and iris border with an ivory floral meander inner stripe, localised wear, missing at each end, slight areas of wear particularly in centre

The design of this carpet clearly derives from that of "vase carpets" of the seventeenth century (May H. Beattie: Carpets of Central Persia, Sheffield, 1976, nos.54-57, pp.79-81). When compared to other North West Persian carpets of the same period, the execution here is particularly close to that of the Kirman originals.
