We are grateful to Dr. Luuk Pijl for proposing a full attribution to Jacques Savery (Courtrai c. 1565-1593 Amsterdam), on the basis of photographs. He notes that the present work is closely related to a gouache on vellum in the Rijksmuseum, signed and dated 'ISAVERIS 158', which shares elements of the composition, the reflections in the water, and use of colour with the present work. He further notes that this work, which is also probably painted on vellum, is characteristic of Savery's style during the 1580s.
