The wines of this historic 17th century Château were well known in England, even mentioned in Pepys's diary, the Pontac Head named after its aristocratic owners! Alas in 1975 the then owner grubbed up the vineyard. The proprietor, the Comte de Pontac very courageously replanted in the late 1980s, his first Sauternes was made in 1991 (one of a succession of poor vintages), the wine coming into full fruition in the 1996 vintage.
