A Meissen gilt-metal-mounted egg-shaped spirit-urn
CIRCA 1742, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK TO BASE, THE MOUNTS CONTEMPORARY
Of quatrefoil section, the vertical bands of gilt foliage at the intersections converging at a small circular cartouche of gilt husks enclosing the factory mark at the base, the two gold ground facets at the sides reserved with bouquets of flowers, the other two painted with figures after Watteau in wooded landscapes above brown and gold scrolling supports, the front with two musicians serenading a seated lady, the reverse with a gallant by a lady adjusting her stocking, the rim with a gilt Laub-und-Bandelwerk border with four shells, on three scroll-moulded pierced feet enriched with gilding and interwoven with green flowering branches, the silver-gilt tap formed as a dog's head, the quatrefoil cover similarly decorated with alternating panels about a gilt quatrefoil knop finial, the cistern upper rim and cover rim with quatrefoil gilt-metal mounts (minute chipping to flowers and ends of green stems, one foot with small firing cracks)
