The château of 's Gravenwezel is notable for it's imposing façade designed by the prolific architect Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the younger (1699-1768), during the second quarter of the 18th century. Of equal interest, however, is the number of stone sculptures by his father, Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the elder (see catalogue note to lot 193). Although none of the works by van Baurscheit the elder are original to the castle presented here is a rare opportunity to see works by the father juxtaposed with the magnificent exterior by his son. Along with lot 193, the castle contains a pair of Luxembourg sandstone urns signed 'VPB F' (not for sale) and the pair of urns being offered here. Although the urns in the present lot are not signed, their form, style and subject matter compares favourably to that of the signed urns. Further stylistic similarities can also be found in the modelling of the putti in two additional groups by van Baurscheit the elder, such as, the Three fighting childern in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (loc. cit) and the Dancing children formerly in the possession of the Earl of Lincoln (see Christie's sale catalogue, London, 19 October 1937, lot 393). In all instances the artist has rendered the short rounded bodies and playful poses of putti in very much the same way as in the present lot, suggesting, therefore, that they were probably conceived in van Baurscheit's workshop.
