An unidentified tomb in one of Cairo's cemeteries, this stands proudly above the other memorials, damaged, but also protected by its overhanging roof. The structure is outlined dramatically against the sky by the deep shadows, which also emphasise the three-dimensional quality of the space between the columns. Again, the subject is right in the centre of this picture and the viewer is looking upwards from a lower level, perhaps to encourage respect, which would certainly be an appropriate sentiment.

This is one of only a few daguerreotypes (including lots 13 and 23) now in the archive, which are identified as Cairo tombs. Each is of a different subject.
