A RARE CLOISONNE ENAMEL 'LOTUS POND' BASIN
MING DYNASTY, EARLY 17TH CENTURY

The flattened interior base vibrantly enamelled with a lotus pond scene comprising blue and white fish, and colourful crustacean swimming amidst water weeds and stalks of lotus flowers, leaves and pods, with a dragonfly overhead, all encircled by a band of scrolling chrysanthemum, the straight sides and flattened everted rim with a multi-hued stylised lotus scroll against a rich turquoise-ground, the exterior undecorated

Compare the decoration on the present basin with that on a jar in Beijing, illustrated in Metal-bodied Enamel Ware, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 62. In both scenes of the lotus pond, the water is designated by green enamel and swirling gilt wire, differentiating it from the sky which is enamelled turquoise and with gilt wire inlaid as small clouds.
