Willem Cornelis Wiercx Jr was the son of Willem Cornelis Sr and Petronella Ansems. He was baptised on 1 July 1760. At the age of 22 he was apprenticed to Breda silversmith Stephanus de Vos. Wiercx was registered as a master in the local silversmith's guild from 4 October 1791 until his death on 12 May 1813. He had a workshop in the Brugstraat and specialised in large silver pieces. Besides this he also traded in hair powder. Wiercx is mentioned as a valuer of silver and gold in 1809. After his death the business was continued by his wife Maria Theresia van Mierlo.
At the time of manufacture the present pair of casters must have appeared quite old-fashioned already. This type of caster had been common in Breda in the 1780s and early 1790s. Possibly Wiercx had learned to manufacture casters like this in the workshop of his master Stephanus de Vos. From Vos' workshop a number of similar casters and mustard-pots have survived dated 1782, the year in which Wiercx entered the workshop as an apprentice (see: J.P. van Rijen op. cit., nos. 78, 79, 80, 84)
