The graphic arts, having played an extremely important role in Bonnard's early career, returned to the fore in his late maturity. The present work, executed circa 1942, was chosen by Bonnard and Jacques Villon, his painter-printmaker colleague, as the subject of a lithograph in a series commissioned by Louis Carré, the first owner of Port de pêche. The production of what has become known as the Bonnard-Villon Album (a suite of eleven lithographs) resulted in a lively correspondence between the two artists, with Bonnard's corrections to Villon's press proofs offering an insight into the studied delicacy with which Bonnard painted.
