Lear wrote to his sister Ann on his first visit to the island in 1848 'I wish I could give you an idea of the beauty of this Island, it is really a Paradise'. At the end of 1855 Lear returned to Corfu, which became a base for him until the British return of the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1864.

Lear spent the Winter of 1861 on the Island of Corfu, before leaving for England in the middle of May 1862.
