Stanhope's Italian landscapes are an often overlooked part of his oeuvre. Their formality evokes the background scenery in early Italian frescoes. It has been suggested that Stanhope was also aware of the contemporary Etruscan school, based in Rome but exhibiting in England. Their main tenet was realism, but their landscapes tended to be narrow and oblong in format.
