The bacchic vases, with rim-tied Silenus heads, derive from a pattern conceived by the Rome-trained artist Joseph Marie Vien (d.1809) and issued in Marie Vien's 'Suite de Vases Composee dans le Gout de l'Antique' Paris, 1760. They are signed by Benedetto Boschetti (d.c.1870), who established his celebrated Rome workshops in 1820 and was a contributor to the London 1851 Exhibition. He also manufactured a rosso antico reduction of the monumental Warwick vase. (A. Gonzales-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Roma e il Regno delle Due Sicilie, Milan, 1984, vol 11, fig. 186).
