Following the immediate succes in Europe of Japanese Imari porcelain exported to the VOC via Deshima from 1682 onwards, Chinese kilns soon followed their example and developed their own Imari style. However examples such as the above lot, where the Japanese design and colour scheme were closely followed are rare.
