The moulded circular top with foliate gilt-embossed green-leather inset writing-surface above a panelled frieze with eight cockbeaded drawers, on a ring-turned columnar shaft and downswept quadripartite base with cabriole legs, pointed pad feet and inset castors, the drawers with plugged holes from a set of 19th century giltmetal axe-head handles since removed but retained, with printed paper depository label 'Griffin and Co's Furniture Depository, Colchester', inscribed 'Longhouse', with two keys, one foot with reinforcing metal bracket

The beautiful flame-figured veneer of this library table is typical of the work of Gillows of London and Lancaster, while the pattern of its elegantly scrolled and plinth-supported 'claw' also corresponds to a pattern that was in use at the firm in 1787 (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 66).
