A MULTI-STRAND GOLD NECKLACE
It was love at first sight when 16 year old Aniela (Nela) Mlynarska met the 38 year old pianist, Arthur Rubinstein. Introduced by her father, the founder and conductor of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the two connected immediately, sparking a 54 year love affair. Born in 1908 in Kaunas, Lithuania, of Polish parents, Nela was a talented dancer, cook and charming hostess. Arthur, well into his successful career when they met, had performed with her father before she was even born. They finally married 8 years after meeting and moved to Montmartre. This home became the scene of many wonderful parties merging the worlds of ambassadors, Rothchilds and musicians with Nela's hospitality and wonderful cuisine. During the Second World War, they relocated to California and Arthur toured the US, Canada and South America -furthering his reputation as one of the most extraordinary pianists in history. Towards the end of the war, the Rubinsteins were able to reclaim their Paris house and spent a great deal of energy repairing and renovating. Around 1978, Nela agreed to take on the challenge of writing a cookbook-which was difficult for her because she seldom measured anything! The recipes needed to be tested and retested, and she enlisted the help of her daughter in the project. After Arthur's death, Nela settled primarily in Paris and summered in Marbella, Spain. Eventually she bought an apartment in New York where at the age of 93 she passed away leaving four children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. THE ESTATE OF MRS. ARTHUR RUBINSTEIN
