Longqing six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double square and of the period (1567-1572)
Painted in bright inky blue with two five-clawed dragons racing amidst clouds in pursuit of flaming pearls above a border of overlapping petals, the body of each dragon wrapped around the corner to extend around two sides

As the reign of the Longqing emperor was very short, there are few dated or reign-marked examples of porcelain that have survived, or indeed were possibly produced. Square vessels in general are also quite rare. Compare a blue and white square box and cover with a similar Longqing reign mark, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 27-28 April 1997, lot 679.
