An unusual design for a tailboard camera, the Sciopticon was patented in 1881 by George Smith who designed the 'Manx Stand' (a folding tripod marketed by the Sciopticon Co.) and may also have been responsible for the Sciopticon magic lantern retailed by Walter G. Woodbury. The sliding panel incorporates a tripod-bush and braces the front part of the camera, while the separate mahogany mounting bracket allows the camera to be used for both portrait and landscape formats.
