These large scale, finely engraved andirons are in keeping with the best examples of the period. A very similar pair of andirons with urn-and-willow engraved plinths is illustrated in Schiffer, The Brass Book, page 69. This motif, while uncommon on andirons, appeared on a range of decorative arts late in the 18th century and on commemorative objects during the period of mourning following the death of George Washington in 1799. Another closely related pair of andirons is illustrated in Sack, American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection (Vol. 3, P3345) p. 768.
