Boys must have known the watercolours executed by Bonington towards the end of his life. Windmills in Northern France (P. Noon, On the Pleasure of Painting, Yale, 1991, p. 284, no. 149, illustrated in colour) is an example particularly close to the present watercolour, in both technique and composition.
The low horizon, figures almost silhouetted and the flock of birds are present in both watercolours to similar effect.
