Circa 1781/82
With cone finial, painted with scenes from Antiquity within a continuous landscape, titled to the interior rim Mus:Ercol: Marisia Scorisato da Apollo in iron-red script, between gilt bands, the foot gilt with a continuous band of laurel leaves, the edge of the cover with similar ornament, below a band of berried leaves and scattered sprigs (the finial restuck, a section of the box broken and restuck, some chips to inner flange)

The 'Ercolanese' service was commissioned in 1781 by Ferdinand IV, King of Naples and the Two Sicilies as a gift to his father Charles III, King of Spain. This was the first service produced by the Naples factory under the Directorship of Domenico Venuti who was appointed to the factory in 1779.
A pair of ice-pails from this service were sold in our King Street Rooms on 9 October 1995, lot 88.
