This plate is part of a service that was a gift from the German state to celebrate Pius XI's fifty years of priesthood (the reverse is printed in gold with SR·HEILIGKEIT PAPST PIUS XI ZUM GOLDENEN PRIESTER- JUBILAEUM DIE DEUTSCHE REICHSREGIERUNG).

Pope Pius XI (1857-1939) was born Achille Ratti. A gifted scholar and expert climber, he made his reputation at the Ambrosian Library, Milan, and in 1912 he was sent by Pius X to Rome to become the assistant librarian at the Vatican. He subsequently became the head of the Vatican library and made a number of diplomatic missions before becoming a cardinal in 1921 and Pope in 1922.
