The graphic source for this cup and saucer is the series of prints by P.W. Tomkins, The Birth and Triumph of Cupid (London, 1795) developed from the original designs by Lady Dashwood, which chart Cupid's progress from birth to final triumph. Fifteen of the twenty-six plates have been adapted for the decoration of this lot, although they do not appear in sequential order. The centre of the saucer, however, does depict the culmination of Cupid's efforts with an image derived from the final plate in the series; Cupid Triumphant in his chariot. The engraving reproduced above is a detail of the 20th plate, Betting on Hope Strikes the Heart, where Cupid ascends 'The Hill of Difficulty' riding on the anchor of Hope in order to reach his target (a heart perched at the top of the hill) more effectively. The shape of this cup appears to have no name.
