Also known as the Wild Boar and Il Porcellino, the sculpture is currently housed in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Its first recorded owner, Paolo Ponti certainly viewed the piece as the famous boar of antiquity and it was described as such by Aldrovandi in his work on the ancient statues of Rome, published in 1556.
The terrible Calydonian Boar was sent by Artemis to Oeneus, to punish him for forgetting to sacrifice to her. It was hunted down and killed by a group of Heroes including Telamon, Jason, Theseus and Nestor, but Artemis, still angry, caused the hunters to quarrel over the hide. This brought about the war between the Aetolians and the Curetes, and subsequent siege of the city of Calydon.
