Entitled in 1994 'The South Gate and the Old Gaol, Southampton'.
There are two drawings of the same subject in the Victoria and Albert Museum, attributed by Girtin and Loshak (loc. cit.) to two artists associated with Girtin through Dr. Monro in the mid 1790s, J.M.W. Turner (ref. 1803-88) and John Henderson (ref.1916 - 1900).
We are grateful to Susan Morris for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
