A RARE MOULDED GOURD AND LACQUER DISH
QING DYNASTY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY

The exterior is crisply moulded with four Shou characters supported on detached foliate arabesques, the black lacquered interior painted in gilt with a central stylised blossom surrounded by a floral meander, with a further leaf scroll encircling the mouth rim (mark effaced)

It is very rare to find gourd vessels enhanced with gilt-painted lacquer. Cf. two other examples of bowls, both with Kangxi shang wan, with this type of embellishment to the interior, one illustrated by G. Tsang and H. Moss, in the Handbook to Chinese Decorated Gourds, International Asian Antiques Fair, Hong Kong, 1983, no. 2; and the other, sold in these Rooms, The Imperial Sale, 26 April 1998, lot 549. Although the present lot is not marked, it is very possible that it was made during the Kangxi reign as well.
