A study for the head of Dorothée in Dorothée surprise par le curé, le barbier et Cardénio, the first scene in Natoire's cycle of thirteen designs for tapestries telling The Story of Don Quixote, now at the Chateau de Compiègne, Don Quichotte vu par un peintre du XVIII. siècle: Natoire, exhib. cat., Compiègne, Musée national du Château, and elsewhere, 1977, no. 5.
The tapestries were commissioned by Pierre Grimod Dufort (1692-1748), and woven at Beauvais. Only ten were actually completed, nine of which are now in the Musée des tapisseries, Aix-en-Provence.
Two counterproofs related to the cycle were sold at Christie's, New York, 28 January 1999, lot 131.
