She was the first fishing schooner designed by Edward Burgess of Boston, MA. She was built by Arthur D. Story at Essex, MA. in 1887. Burgess had previously designed the America's Cup defenders; Puritan, Mayflower, and Volunteer. She was the first fishing schooner to have a pole bow sprit. Her very sharp ends, great dead-rise, and strong rocker in the keel profile were some of the many aspects where her design departed from other fishing schooners of the period.
