Company Sergeant-Major Mateyu Longwe, an Atonga tribesman, originally enlisted in the King's African Rifles during the course of the Great War and was wounded while serving with the 2/1st Battalion in early September 1918. He remained a Regular until being discharged in June 1929, but re-enlisted at Zomba, Nyasaland for the duration of hostilities in October 1940, his Service Record showing further entitlement to an Africa Star and War Medal 1939-45.
