Private Miles Troughton was born at Kerby, near Kendal and enlisted in the Grenadier Guards locally in August 1839, aged 21 years. In his subsequent career of 21 years with the Colours, he served for over two years in the Crimea and was present at the Battles of Alma, Balaklava and Inkermann, in addition to the operations before Sebastopol, in which latter place he was wounded by a contusion to his head. He was finally discharged at Dublin in September 1860 and received his L.S. and G.C. Medal in July 1862.
