Ex Payne Collection.

Major John William Pringle was appointed a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in May 1811 and quickly saw action in the Peninsula at the Battles of Nivelle, Nive and Orthes. He was also present at Waterloo, where he was wounded, services that possibly contributed to his advancement to 2nd Captain, R.E. in June of the same year. Pringle, who later obtained the rank of Major, died at Bath in October 1861.
