Only four Officers and 15 Other Ranks received the Military General Service Medal for services in the Staff Corps of Cavalry, which unit was established in 1813 as a replacement for the hard-pressed Department of the Provost Marshal. Four Troops were raised under the command of Sir George Scovell and attached to the Adjutant-General's Department. The duties of the Corps were to patrol camps, deal with stragglers and protect the local population from any excesses by the troops. Its Other Ranks were invariably reliable, long serving senior Non-Commissioned Officers or Troopers, the whole with clean records. Both Officers and Other Ranks received extra pay for their services.
Private G. King originally enlisted into the 2nd Dragoon Guards in 1799 and, having served on the Home Establishment, transferred to the Corps and was embarked for the Peninsula in 1813.
