PETSCHILI PROVISIONALS
QQThe German Post Office in Shanghai ordered a supply of unoverprinted Germania stamps for use on field post mail and telegrams. Part of this supply was sent to Tientsin where the provisinal handstamp was applied.
QQBecause of the partial overlapping of the civil and military post offices, the postal validity of these stamps was not restricted to the field post offices. It is impossible to differentiate between stamps issued by military or civilian post offices and postmarks from any location under the German Post Office in either China or Kiaochow are legitimate.
QQThe field post service closed on 31 August 1901 and all remaining supples were returned to Shanghai to be used up. Unoverprinted stamps are found genuinely used until the end of postal validity on 31 December 1902
cover 1900 (15 Dec.) envelope registered to Naples bearing Germania 40pf. used in combination with 20pf. overprinted "China" (56 degrees) tied by Peking c.d.s. and showing French "LIGNE N" datestamp alongside plus a faint arrival c.d.s. on the reverse. Some light peripheral soiling but still fresh and attractive. Mi. Vf
