FOOCHOW PROVISIONAL
QQThe Foochow Post Office opened on 19th June 1900. Soon after this, the stock of 5pf. stamps ran out and there was insufficient time to obtain a fresh supply from Shanghai. The postal administrator ordered a wooden handstamp from a Chinese printer to surcharge 10pf. stamps.
QQThe first printing was made on 7th July. 100 stamps with 48 degree overprint and 1400 stamps with 56 degree overprint were surcharged. A few double surcharges are recorded.
QQA second printing was made on 7th November when 2500 stamps with 48 degree overprint were surcharged. Only the date can distinguish the two printings
Surcharged on "China" at 48 Degrees
used 5pf. on 10pf. 48 degrees overprint, from the first printing and clearly dated 1900 (14 July) with a Foochow c.d.s. Very fine in every respect. Used one week after issue, a rare stamp, only one hundred first printing stamps released. Hans Bothe Certificate (1981) and displaying an array of guarantee marks on the reverse including Köhler and Willmann. Mi. 7 A.1, 15,000 Dm
