Although signed by Dollond, this microscope is clearly the work of Hugh Powell. Before joining Peter Lealand in 1842, Powell was selling his own microscopes from 1840. Prior to that he produced microscopes for other makers, including Andrew Pritchard (see lot 293). He most probably made for Dollond as well. This example was proboably retailed by Dollond.

This example is slightly simpler than that which was sold in these rooms on 3 March 1994 (lot 353). These differences include the non-focusing body-tube and the simpler sub-stage.

A similar instrument with the Dollond signature is in the Billings Collection.
