Werner's first book in which he classified the outward characteristics of minerals and established standards of quantification which continued to be used into the 19th-century. He is best known as the author of the influential oceanic theory of the origin of world's crust which began the Neptunist-Vulcanist theory which was to dominate 19th-century geology.
