"Classifying minerals using their chemical composition was one of the Irish chemist's finest works and the first such systematic treatment in English. He clung to the phlogiston theory, got involved in the controversy over James Hutton's Theory of the Earth, had his library captured at sea by an American privateer, and kept a pet eagle" (Hoover).
