Drawn circa 1913, the present work belongs to a series of drawings which relate to Klimt's celebrated oil painting Die Jungfrau of 1913 (N. and D. no. 184; see Lot 14, fig. 1). In this spectacular oil, Klimt joins together several entwined female figures on a cloud of flowers, each in a different pose, and representing the diverse stages of a woman's sensual awakening.

The present work mirrors the figure depicted to the left of the canvas. Probably hiding in anguish, she is portrayed with her face completely concealed, and her body somewhat distorted reminiscent of a Schiele drawing. Other notable drawings from the series are housed in the Albertina and the Historische Museum der Stadt in Vienna.
