The State Steamship Company, founded in 1873 to satisfy the Scottish demand for cheap emigrant passages to New York, provided the most austere accommodation of any British trans-Atlantic shipping line and offered Steerage berths costing only six guineas. Operating seven ships each named after an American state, the company met with little success and eventually sold its assets to the Allen Line in 1891.
