The earliest of the Doges represented in the collection is Francesco Foscari (reigned from 1423 to 1457), the greatest of the Doges at the end of the Middle Ages; it is he who kneels before the lions of St. Mark's Basilica, and whose tragic last years are commemorated in Verdi's opera 'Le Due Foscari'.
