Professor Lamp (African Arts, 1986, p.66) writes that "A-Tshol is not necessarily under the control of the initiation society, although its practitioner would naturally be a member of that association. It is rather the possession of a lineage group or village and is controlled by the eldest member of that group for the general protection of the group against evil forces."
