The irregular-shaped purple stone highly polished to the top and lightly carved with scrolls interspersed with areas of natural skin and with scattered olive-green 'eye' inclusions, the reverse with an inscription, Daqian Zibao, 'Treasure of (Zhang) Daqian', followed by his hallmark, Da Fengtang, 'Hall of Strong Winds', incised within a square, complete with an 18th century carved zitan fitted box and cover

Previously sold in these Rooms, 31 March 1992, lot 908; the present inkstone was reputedly inscribed by Zhang Daqian, and was acquired directly from the artist (fig. 1).
