Boudet is recorded as having worked at 43, blvd des Capucines prior to 1886 and moving to 8, place Vendome. His atelier was known to specialize in furniture, bronzes and objects d'art. Although he was known for his jewel-like quality bronzes the offered lot appears to have more attention paid to the quality of stained and engraved veneers which all incorporate motifs of the musical arts. (See D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle, 1984 p. 95)
The offered lot is an imaginative pastiche of a table à écrire designed by Jean-Henri Riesener for Fontainebleau in 1771, now in the Petit Trianon. The foliate scrolling gilt-bronze corner mounts and frieze mounts as well as the leg design have been incorporated into the design of the piano to create an exquisite example of the Louis XVI style.
