With twin opposing enamelled circular dials with roman chapters, one signed 'JULES ALLARD FILS PARIS', the other signed 'NEW YORK JULES ALLARD FILS', in an arched rectangular waisted case inset with pierced shaped rectangular panels applied with berried-laurel surmounted by a glass globe enclosing an astrolabe with the signs of the Zodiac, on pierced cabriole legs with leaf-tip cast feet the knees applied with portrait medallions of classically draped males and females--78¾in. (200cm.) high

Celestin-Jules-Auguste Allard, also known as Jules Allard, worked at 50, rue du Fauborg-du-Temple. His ateliér was reknown for quality furniture and bronze. He participated in the Exposition Universalle of 1867 and 1889 and in 1878 was awarded a gold medal(See D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle, pp. 26-29).

This magnificent clock is based on the celebrated astonomical clock by Claude-Siméon Passemant and Damthiau, the case by Jacques Caffieri, supplied to The Academy of Sciences in 1749, and later given to Louis XV for the Cabinet de la Pendule in Versailles(See G. Van der Kemp, Versailles, 1978, pp. 116-117).
