This portrait may represent two of the figures who were closely connected with the traditional Scottish ballad 'Annie Laurie'; John Wilson and Lady John Douglas Scott. John Wilson, an Edinburgh born singer, was well-known for his renditions of traditional Scottish ballads. Lady John Douglas Scott in 1838 ammended and set to music the original 1685 poem that William Douglas wrote for his sweetheart, 'Bonnie Annie Laurie'.
