The reputed provenance of this chimneypiece is supported by the date of its purchase; Londonderry House was the last survivor of the great London palaces and not demolished until 1962-3. James Stuart's house of 1760 was much altered by Benjamin and Philip Wyatt in the 1820s but a certain amount of Stuart's work, particularly on the first floor, survived until demolition
