The present picture belongs to a series of oils painted by Liebermann of the Staatsoper Berlin in the early 1920s.

The artist also executed three etchings of this subject in 1922 (Sch. 344, 361, 367).

The previous owner, Fritz Weber, was a close friend of Liebermann as well as his favoured frame-maker. Amongst other Liebermanns owned by Weber was a fine watercolour entitled Papageienallee now housed in the Kunsthalle Bremen.
