The present models are similative to a design published Jaques Androuet Ducerceau a print of circa 1560, representing sphinxes and a mythical sea beast, as used in the celebrated Sea Dogs table at Hardwick Hall. The design is reproduced in Furniture Design Before 1650, by Simon Jervis, Furniture History Society, 1974.
