Quite opaque with vivid, purple rim; very sweet, fleshy nose, but on the palate that flesh overwhelmed by the tannins when tasted in May 1983. Tasted again in cask in September 1984, two months before it was due to be bottled: a ripe, mulberry richness of fruit, fabulously mouthfilling. In 1989 it was the least mature-looking of the first-growths and certainly immature on the palate. But the nose was minty, peppery, with high alcohol, leathery with tannin, yet with the scent of Cabernet Sauvignon which opened up in the glass and continued to churn out endlessly. A crisp Cabernet flavour, lovely structure and balance but quite unready. Bouquet of coffee, allspice. Sweet, velvety, great depth
